Honda Marine Doubles Up At Yarrawonga

2 December 2008 - The ‘Honda Marine’ kids’ boat tore up Yarrawonga’s Lake Mulwala in late November for its third major race meeting, with its young pilots competing alongside their Honda formula 2000 counterpart in front of nearly 10,000 spectators.

Modelled after four-stroke racer Darren Milgate’s F2 competition craft, the junior ‘Honda Marine’ is available for 12-16 year olds who want to try out a racing boat but don’t own one themselves.

Honda donated a BF15 outboard engine to power the racer, owned by the Australian Power Boat Association (APBA), and competitors are now reaching speeds of over 50 kmh.

The kids’ boat was a hit at the Yarrawonga street parade held on the Friday night, riding proudly behind the craft that inspired it.

“The Junior Honda Marine is great because it gives kids a chance to try out racing and receive feedback from the best in the sport,” said Darren Milgate.

“It’s all about having fun, experiencing racing and getting involved with the sport in safe conditions and for an affordable price.”

“The boat performed really well at Yarrawonga, getting a first, second and third place. It’s certainly the favourite with the kids, and everyone wants to drive it.”

Darren Milgate’s craft – also named ‘Honda Marine’ – had a successful weekend as well, placing second in both F2000 Super Stock races on Saturday and showing great pace.

“Honda outboards prove that four-stroke is just as competitive as two-stroke. Every form of car and motorcycle racing has made the upgrade and now it’s time for marine. We need to be responsible about our sport.”
